How to create a professional LinkedIn profile
With over 645 million users, it is no surprise as to why LinkedIn is so popular with professionals. It allows candidates to avail of job opportunities, engage with content from their sector and connect with other professionals within their industry. And with 122 million people receiving job interviews through LinkedIn, it is a very important platform for both employers, recruiters and candidates.
At GKR Search & Selection, our recruiters are trained to find the best quality candidates through a number of sources, including LinkedIn. We see a lot of profiles each day and know exactly how to make profiles professional and noticeable. Check out some of our tips below:
Profile Picture
A professional profile picture is the first step to creating the perfect LinkedIn profile. Consider investing in professional headshots and avoid using any inappropriate photos that you wouldn’t want your future employer to see. Your profile is 21x times more likely to be viewed with a professional profile picture and you will receive 9x times more connections. Keeping it professional will be an investment in your career.
Headline
Your headline is located directly below your name. This is key to making a strong first impression. Make it quick by summing up what you do in a few words. Keep it clear and professional and use keywords that indicate what exactly your current role is.
Summary
Your summary is where you can introduce yourself. Give a quick overview of your strengths, skills and attributes and use buzzwords like ‘skilled’ and ‘passionate’. Remember to start it strong. LinkedIn only gives the first three lines of your summary before readers have to click to ‘See more’ so be sure to sell yourself from the very beginning. Use keywords to get noticed and also speak the language of your industry.
Recommendations
Companies want to work with people who they can trust and who are good at their job. Recommendations can highlight your abilities to a recruiter so don’t be afraid to collect keywords from your past employers or co-workers.
Skills and Accomplishments
Your LinkedIn should indicate all of your strengths and skills to a recruiter. Recruiters often use keywords to find candidates so ensure that you are including all of your relevant skills for your current and past roles as they may get you noticed for your next role.
Detailed descriptions
Your LinkedIn is like an online CV, so it's important to describe what your responsibilities were in each role. Always refer to yourself in the first person, otherwise, it will sound impersonal. Use bullet points to keep it neat and clear. Include any accomplishments from your roles in each description for additional impact.
Open Candidates
If you are on the market for a new role then ensure that you have your page ‘Open to new opportunities’. This will signal to recruiters that you are interested in being contacted by them. You can also select the types of roles, locations and contract types that you wish to hear about. Recruiters will often use this feature as a further reason to contact candidates if they know they are on the job market. You can turn this on by clicking ‘Career Interests’ on the Jobs tab on your profile.
Engage
It's always good to be active on LinkedIn. Regularly check your InMail to see if a recruiter has got in touch about possible job opportunities. You should also engage with content that is relevant to your industry such as articles and debates. Reach out and connect with people in your sector and your workplace and engage with their posts. LinkedIn allows users to join up to 50 groups. Join groups that are relevant to your career and engage with the members and content posted within.

Why Should You Use a Recruiter ?
When you’re starting your job search it can be quite overwhelming trying to find the right place to start. Whether it’s a graduate job or a change of career, finding the perfect job for you isn’t always the easiest of tasks. It’s a period of change in a candidate’s life and often the process can be so overwhelming that the candidate either fails to secure a placement or drops out of the race.
And it is no wonder how overwhelmed job seekers can be in this era of hyper-connectivity which leaves candidates frustrated with themselves and the companies hiring. So why bring a third party into this already chaotic experience.
According to LinkedIn , 63% of candidates feel flattered when recruiters reach out to them and over 90% of candidates are open to new opportunities from recruiters.
Check out some of the main reasons you should consider a recruiter on your job search.
Search Engines
Recruiters have all the tools to act as a search engine to provide you with the right job opportunity. They have contacts across a range of industries with direct contact with HR and hiring managers and are often the first people approached when a job opportunity arises. If your recruiter doesn’t have a job for you straight away, they may be able to refer you for a job in the future. They know exactly what to look for in a job for you and what to look for in a candidate for a job. Recruiters also have access to roles that aren’t always advertised, particularly with senior-level roles. Companies may trust a recruiter to find the right candidate out of their own pool without having to ever advertise the role.
Knowledge
As well as acting as search engines, recruiters are also incredibly knowledgeable about the job market especially if they are in a niche market such as aircraft leasing. They are highly connected within these industries and will be an immediate source of information about what should be on your CV and in preparing you for an interview. Often, recruiters will have hired other people into a role in a company, so they are knowledgeable about the interview process and the particular wants and skills needed for a company. They have advice and information about different companies and roles and they can prepare you for specific interviews which is something a job seeker could never get if they were to try and source the role themselves.
Support
Recruiters can support you throughout all stages of the job application process. By recommending you to specific roles, to CV and interview advice, to even negotiating the best possible deal for you. Recruiters are experienced and they know exactly what candidates can get so they can negotiate this element on your behalf. It is mutually beneficial to you and the recruiter for you to be placed so they will do what they can to get you noticed. Recruiters are trained to notice your best skills and qualities and advocate them to the hiring company, giving you an advantage over people who don’t have a recruiter supporting them. Recruiters also have a duty to both the candidate and the company to only recommend candidates who are the right fit for the company meaning they won’t put you forward for any roles that you won’t enjoy or work well in.
Positioning
One of the most important parts of working with a recruiter is always knowing where you stand in a job application. There’s nothing more frustrating than never hearing back from a job application or worse again from a job interview. A recruiter knows how important feedback is and because they have good relationships with HR departments in companies, they will provide feedback to you from the interviewer and feedback to the interviewer from you. Recruiters will always make sure you are aware of your position within the recruitment process and if that means you didn’t get the job they can focus on getting you the next opportunity instead.
As you can see, there are endless benefits for job seekers to work with a recruitment consultant to find them the job of their dreams. And what’s best is, recruitment companies services are cost-free for the candidate, meaning you can have access to all of the knowledge and support of a recruiter but the company pay the recruitment fee.

This week, members of our GKR team attended the launch of ‘The Year of Inclusion’ in the Irish Aviation Industry in the U centre in DCU’s Glasnevin campus.
The event included a fantastic list of guest speakers from various backgrounds who shared their experiences and thoughts on inclusion and diversity within the industry and in their own companies.
The speakers included Amelia Anderson, Co-Founder and President of AWAR, Peter Barrett CEO at SMBC Aviation Capital, Brid Horan, Co-Chair Balance for Better Business and Ronan Gallagher, Air Navigation Services Division in the Department of Transport.
As recruiters, it’s important for us to recognise the need for diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry. The event kicked off with Amelia Anderson who said that in order to drive change in the aviation industry, then we first need to engage men and people in power. Amelia said that ‘The Year of Inclusion’ initiative isn’t just about gender, but that it is far broader and there are legacy barriers that need to be addressed within the aviation industry.
Also speaking about the need for diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry was Brid Horan who said that the speed of change in Ireland was rapid. She also discussed research carried out about inclusion in the workplace and said that there is a correlation between gender-balanced management and better performance in companies.
Peter Barret and Ronan Gallagher also spoke about their own experiences with inclusion and diversity in their roles in the aviation industry and offered some fascinating points in relation to this. Peter expressed his wish for all candidates to have the same pathway to reach their full potential in the industry and Ronan noting that we need the still have this energy for this type of change in the future
The event was a great opportunity for our team to learn about the new changes coming to the industry and also to be more aware of diversity and inclusion in aviation. It was also a fantastic opportunity to see industry leaders acknowledging the need for diversity and inclusion and to see all the work that has been put in to tackle this already.
We would like to say a huge well done to the team in DCU’s Centre of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion for organising a great event and well done to all the speakers on the evening for offering some fascinating and thoughtful points.

When you're going for a job interview, people can often get distracted by selling their academic and work achievements. And even though these are the foundation of your interview and are often key to securing interviews, candidates can sometimes forget that interviews are an opportunity to promote your personal brand to a potential employer. Companies want to understand your personal brand and often if it is strong and well portrayed, you can distinguish yourself from other interviewees. It’s how you want to be perceived in the professional world and how you want to be remembered by a company whether it be online, on your CV or in person.
1. CV
Your CV is the first place where potential employers or recruiters can understand your personal brand. If you have a neat, well- structured CV showcasing your suitability to a role in an organised manner, then chances are you will come across a lot better than a candidate who has a poorly laid out CV that is dated. Your CV is where you introduce your personal brand to an employer, so it is important that you highlight all of your academic and personal achievements in this space. It should be an accurate representation of your brand. Always update your CV on a regular basis to include new work experiences, personal achievements and skills. Include a short personal statement at the very beginning to further sell your personal brand to potential employers. Make sure to include a link to your LinkedIn account on your CV so employers can explore your personal brand further. Dedicating time to editing and tailoring your CV is so important as it is the one piece of material that can determine your chances for an interview. A potential interviewer or recruiter should be able to glance at your CV and immediately get an understanding of your persona and suitability for a role but you also need to make sure it is attractive enough to make them want to take a second glance at it.
2. Online
Being active online (in the correct manner) is also an opportunity to introduce your personal brand to a company. Your LinkedIn page can be just as important as your CV, especially for recruitment companies who may source talent via LinkedIn. They will look for suitable profiles and if they think you would suit the role, they will contact you. Your LinkedIn needs to clearly portray your personal brand. LinkedIn operates like a social network in many ways and being present and active on the site can increase your employment opportunities. Make sure that you include a tag line, a photo and fill in your about section. Avoid using an inappropriate photo of yourself, keep it professional and only showcase on LinkedIn what you want your potential employer to see. A professional picture and a strong tagline will immediately portray a good personal brand. Make sure you include all of your experience on LinkedIn and don’t be afraid to elaborate on your duties and skills you acquired during your work experiences and education. The content on your LinkedIn should portray the type of professional you want employers to see. Engage and share content on your feed, show interest in content about your field or industry. Aside from LinkedIn, online can be a good place to further sell your personal brand. Employers may also search for you on social networking sites or google so avoid posting anything on these sites that may promote a bad personal brand. Google yourself regularly to see what employers can see and always ensure your personal brand comes through.
3. Interview
If you reach the interview stage, you have successfully portrayed your professional brand to potential employees. But the interview is the first place they will get to meet you in person and the interview stage is what usually can make or break your application. By reading your CV and visiting your online sites, potential employers probably have a good sense of who you are and what your personal brand is. But the interview is where you get to bring everything you have sold online and on your CV to life. Showcase your personal brand from the very beginning with a firm handshake, eye contact and a positive mindset. Let your personal brand guide you through the interview by answering questions as they are presented on your CV. Have a positive attitude and good energy. The purpose of developing your personal brand is so that a potential employer may find it is a good fit and offer you the role so it is important to portray it throughout the interview. After the interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The interviewer may want to know about you, but you also want to know about the company. This shows the interviewer that you are interested and confident. When you’re leaving, thank the interview panel and shake their hands, leaving them with a good impression and your personal brand will be ingrained in them.
Developing your personal brand can be effective in securing your future job! Spend time tailoring your CV and LinkedIn and make sure you know what you want to portray to employers. If you’re confident in your personal brand, then your next company will be too!
